Personal Universe Series, 2013 are measured paintings made with acrylic, permanent black marker, nylon string, various map pins and tacks, acetate on canvas. Three varied size paintings were made for this series. I was interested in measuring a painting's visible brush strokes in a linear manner. I drew out the lines in marker and followed distinct and prominent brush strokes, then measuring the lines created in inches and calculated degrees. I wrote the measurements and angle degrees on the canvas creating a chaotic but ordered abstract work - a constellation. I covered up the surface with units and numbers in black marker that just looked like black repetitive marks. This process covered up the original lines measured, so I proceeded to redraw the lines by sewing white nylon string through the canvas to capture the geometric structure underneath followed by remeasuring the surface in the same detail manner but this time writing measurements on small strips of acetate and using map pins and tacks to point to their direct location. Below I provided some images of the process in creating these meditative and dimensional paintings.
